Multiple Images

Multiple Images Is a large part of photography, lots of different techniques fall under this for example multiple exposure and collage. This page I will use to display my findings and work of multiple images, Firstly I will be posting my popplet on here which will show my work and ideas I am hoping to accomplish over the following weeks. My final piece will also be posted on this page and it will be focused on multiple images. The progression will be shared on this page as I come nearer to finishing my final piece. I will also be using popplet to document my thoughts on the project which is posted below.

My favourite Image
The Reason I like this photo is because it's quite simple, but effective. When I was looking through all these various images during my work with multiple images this one made me laugh. There really isn't a lot of depth here which could be a criticism but in my case I like how it represents how images can be simple but have a large impact at the same time. I could of done more research into similar photos, however I am quite new to this style of photography and was unaware of photographers who use this style of art. I am going to change this so every time I see a image that I like which uses multiple images I can add it to it which will give me some ideas and lead me to produce more creative work.
Narrative imageNarrative images where quite difficult as you have to create a story through the images so the spectrum for creativity was quite broad. my first couple of attempts didn't go to well mainly because I was at a stump for ideas, after some experimenting though I was able to get some images. I wasn't that pleased with it it was quite a simple image and it could have been more creative. However I did like the story that was told which was a transformation of one person to another through a drink. If I decide to do this again I will go for a more complex attempt which involves a longer sequence of photos so I can develop a better storyline, this is more of my test narrative image.

Famous multiple images
For narrative images I like the works of Duane Michals which is a man known well for his creations of narrative images, as I studied him i thought I would put up some of his work to show his what his work was about. He works are often very innovative and he incorporates feeling and emotions into his pictures.
Here are a couple of sequenced images created by Duane Michals I feel like behind each one there is a deeper meaning, also they all seem to share that feeling of cold or maybe slight depression. My favourite out of these lot is probably the two men crossing each other and exchanging glances, when i see this i think about reminiscing.
Multiple exposuresThe first technique that I would try was multiple exposures for this i used photoshop to blend a two pictures, I could really get creative and try and make some interesting outcomes. My first image was a picture of Michael Jordan in black and white but his jersey had been replaced with a snowy environment, this was more of my prototype. I didn't have much of an idea when i started but I wanted some type of sportsman or sportswoman with a landscape as it contrasted quite well. Also I found that the black and white gave a cold effect supported by the ice on his jersey. The other attempts I got rid of because I feel as if they were straying away from the task but I now would like to put them up to see all my attempts and why they were bad.

Street photography
|
For this homework I had to decide on a certain object that appeared and take a picture of ever one I found on my street, for this I decided to take a picture of any object protruding out of the floor such as a tree or a postbox. I wasn't that pleased with these photos I might have another go as the images here are more a rushing to find something rather than a long thought about what would look in a range of photos. However I did not think it was all bad I liked that I had taken the pictures from the same position not showing all of the object. This gave the photo a sense of mystery as you want to see more of it, but I could have been a slightly more delicate with the photography. I'm still deciding whether or not this could be used in my final piece or if I should us something else.

Multiple image proposal
Which artists or kinds of image have you researched so far for this project? Describe one or two of these images in detail
So far I have looked into multiple exposures and Narrative image but I am planning to look into collage as some further research. During my work, I have looked at lots of photographers to spark my ideas, such as Duane Michals. For my multiple exposure work I had a look on pinterest for some examples of work and a push in the right direction. I found a couple of images from Matt Wisniewski. His pictures usually consist of someone with a landscape which has been edited onto them. His pieces in multiple exposures work really well and this influenced me to try it out which resulted in my Michael Jordan picture which was ok but it lacked finesse. Whereas his exposures are so subtly blended such as the black and white one of the girl with a sea exposure, when I looked at it, it inspired me to experiment like him. When it came to narrative images I was a bit stuck due to the fact you could do anything so I didn't know how to start. Later I made a piece which told the story of someone transforming over a drink.
What have you learned from this research? What ideas of your own have you had?
Since my research began I feel like I have learned that when it comes to multiple exposures there is so much that can be done and this has been helpful as you can really play around and get a feel for it. Also looking at professionals work I can now look at my work and can tell if I have been effective . Also from my research I know how to make subtle changes which change it from a picture to a piece of artwork. Since witnessing others work I had the idea to mix nature with people in my multiple images. Also the narrative images I chose to show a transformations through a picture. My final idea that I thought of was to have two pictures; one old and one new of the same location, however this idea faded out and I began to become more interested in multiple images and having that involved in my final piece.
What kinds of images have you made so far in class and at home? What has been successful? What has been your biggest challenge so far?
So far in my multiple images I have made a couple of images. The first image I tried was my multiple exposure which was quite a successful. It was a black and white image of Michael Jordan. I felt that the picture could have been neater, what I mean by this is the cutting could have been cleaner. However I did like the affect the picture had as it had a cold feel to it and when I see it it reminds me of loneliness. My biggest challenge so far has probably been to learn to use photoshop and when to use it. I have a lot of problems with the layers and cuttings. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do for my final project but i'll hopefully realise as I go along. Although I'm now sure that I want my final piece to be centered around some sort of narrative sequence of images.
Describe in detail your best idea so far for this Multiple Images assignment. What are you hoping to create? How will you do it? What equipment or techniques/processes will you need to use? How long will it take to make? How might you decide to display it when you have finished? My best idea so far for the multiple images assignment was to have a sequence of images to tell a story based on regret. I was going to get a family member to purchase a item from the shops which is tabooed (i.e tobacco) then another family member confront them which starts an argument. However the person sees himself in the future and realises what is wrong with his/her decision. I wasn't sure to what this would lead too; I just know that I like narrative sequences. I will do this by using my iPod touch with a black and white filter for effect. I reckon it will take about 2 hours, however the decoration I'm still unsure of but I may leave it bare as I want the focus to be on the pictures.

Final piece pictures
Final piece
WWWI really liked this final piece I felt like what I was trying to was accomplished I had enough pictures so it has that feeling of a proper story I was quite pleased with the quality of the pictures. I decided that having them in black and white would look better than your standard colour as black and white has a more authentic feel. Also the colour sets the morbid tone which I was going for. I didn't take to many photos so that it loses interest but enough so it can build up a story I am pleased with this end result.

EBIFirstly the images were in line except for the top line which there was about a centimeter difference from the rows underneath because I didn't measure properly. The was a thin white border running around the outside which I tried to cut without measuring which almost ruined it luckily it got saved. There was going to be a poem in the bottom right hand corner to fill it out or between the lines but unfortunately I ran out of time, these can make the picture look more meaningful so I will aim to do this in the future.
