Light paintingight painting is a photographic technique which happens when exposures are made by moving a hand held light which leaves a trail of light allowing you to draw in your picture. The higher time you put on the shutter the longer you can draw. Its quite a old photographic technique and it as been around since 1914 when Frank Gilberth and his wife used light and open shutters to capture movement. Its a very surreal effect as it allows you to have a photo but editing at the same time can give a very nice blend of skill; also you can really experiment with them.

How to make light paintings |
Our light paintingsIn class we had a chance to experiment with the light paintings and get some of our own. This was fun as we had a chance to see how much we could do with the light paintings. Also as it was our first time it had a very surreal feeling to it which made it motivating as each time you wanted to do more and more in each photo. We only took about 5 or 6 in total but that was due to time constraints because of the setup and discussion. My favourite one we took in our group was the one of Shay and it looked like light was shooting out of his palms. Although it is quite simple it is very effective as the light seems to illuminate the space around Shay leaving his face only partially illuminated which gives it this cold strange feeling when you see it.

Our light paintings |
My thoughts on light paintingsPersonally I feel that light paintings are one of the best things we have learnt so far. I felt like it was a really good time to experiment and create something unique. Light paintings are something that I will try and use again in another piece of my own work as they encourage me to experiment a bit more.
