personal project 1#: mobile photographyMobile photography is simply the act of capturing images with a mobile, hence iphoneography and other popular photographic techniques involving mobiles. In the last few years the use of mobile photography has risen and many photographers use this instead of larger cameras.
It has became so influential manufacturers are bringing phones to cameras. A great way to sum up mobile photography is that the best camera is the one that's always on you. This leads me onto a range of reasons on the advantages mobile photography has in general and other techniques e.g. tripod shots. Certain characteristics help define mobile photography -its inherently mobile i.e. no staged shots. -made exclusively with a smartphone or mobile device -easy editing of pictures by apps e.c.t -editing apps makes it more convenient and easy -sharing images is easily accessible -sites for sharing image e.g. instagram -people are encouraged to do it especially amateurs |
My favourite mobile photographer
Although I am still new to the concept of mobile photography I have got to say my favourite mobile photographer at the moment is Star Rush. She is a photographer from Seattle Washington and she works mainly with iphone 3G's. This picture above was quite strange I like it though as it is has a strange feeling about it just like a lot of her work. Her work seems to have this timeless feel to it often taking pictures of people or some old derelict place. She explores between the past and present and all of her subjects in her photos are done with natural light and in public.

First try at mobile photographyThese images are from our groups first attempts of trying mobile photography which was done using the iPad's. There is a range of different outcomes within these photos; they are mainly focused on light, shade and colour. For my first attempts I was rather happy with the outcome and I don't think there are any which I don't like therefore I am rather pleased with that aspect. My favourite picture out of them was the vertical shot of the wall as it came across so bright and then the sky for some reason came out really dark which contrasted really well, also the angle of the shot work well. I did also like the tree with the sun cutting through and the various shots of people jumping seemed to work as well. I was pleased with this and it has influenced me to try more mobile photography.

Photo AnalysisThis is the first chance we had to break a picture down and look at the individual techniques that make this photo effective. This picture was from Michael Baranovic and is part of the mobile photo group. I really liked it although most of their pictures were really impressive. I liked how it was so out of place and it seemed so strange with the dogs in the chairs. This added a nice effect. Once I had put a grid on it I realised that the picture was almost symmetrical which was really interesting. This is because street photographers normally get a natural look which is not staged. However this picture does not follow the rules

Mobile photography homeworkThis was my second attempt at mobile photography however it was my first independent try as it was for homework. I liked this task as it was over a longer period of time therefore I had longer to experiment getting my pictures. I had found out that most phones had a grid so I applied this to pictures as I hadn't used it in school. The only slight problem was the lighting. I could not get a lot of natural light meaning some of them do not look as impressive. My favourite picture was the very dark looking tree with the light sky as it didn't look like that in reality. What I mean is that it could be anything, i thought it looked like black paint on a canvas.
Patterns homeworkThis home work was quite a challenge for me, I found that trying to find interesting patterns I might of used less techniques meaning it looked less impressive overall. I did like some of the pictures but to be entirely honest I wasn't to impressed with it. Although from this experience i have learnt that when I'm trying new ideas keep your base techniques this activity has taught me a lot on what you can class as a pattern and what techniques you can incorporate into them.

Trip to londonwhat did we do?The photos above show our trip to and from the art gallery; almost drawing a timeline. I really enjoyed it as it allowed us complete freedom in taking pictures and experimenting with different techniques and apps to create really impressive images. It was really interesting because in London there was so many great opportunities to take photo's. I do feel like I have a good range of pictures. However the real point of the trip was to see the exhibitions. Firstly we saw Tim Walker 'Story Teller' this I preferred of the two as it had a crazy feel to it which I really liked and I felt that this impacted on the pictures. After that we saw Cartier-Bresson 'Story Teller' which was quite different to the first and had some interesting techniques. I liked it because it seemed to have a natural feel to it not staged, it seemed as if the decisive moment had been used. After seeing these techniques I have realised how I could make my own photographs better and what I might of been doing wrong. My favourite picture out of them was ether the one of Huck on the bench with the picture of the old man I don't know why but it seemed to work really well esp ecially with Huck being in the corner. I felt I had used the decisive moment when taking it which gave it a really nice effect.

Questionnaire: Cartier BressonQuestionnaire: Tim walkerTim Walker seems to have a different approach to photography than others it is firstly very strange and different but they are very obvious. what I mean by that is your eyes are drawn to his strange style of photos. I think he is motivated by the world of fantasy because there are based in pictures which give it this really effective feel. I really liked the design, it wasn't just photos the whole place had this fairytale feel. Along with the pictures there was these giant fake insects and a huge skeleton and at one end of the exhibition there was there this towering doll which was very creepy. This seemed to create a atmosphere and you could understand the story behind each picture it also layered on the effect of the exhibition, it was not I was expecting but it worked really well. He tells the story of fairy tales throughout the exhibitions he uses lots of bright colours and strange objects which helps keep it interesting. He creates this amazing feel of a story tale, its so weird but so effective a lot of the pieces got a reaction wether it be shock or fright it was very impressive.
