Edward MuybridgeHe was an english photographer mainly known for his very important work and research into moving images and motion pictures. He was alive from 9th April 1830-8th May 1904. He is very well known for his many pictures of animals as well as the motion imagery he pioneered throughout the the 19th century. He first started his career in a London printing and publishing company, then he went through a lot of jobs until the late 1860's when he became a professional photographer. However still to this day one of the most famous finds was when he used moving imagery to capture the movements of a horse which could not be captured by the human eye. He put numerous cameras along a track triggered by a thin thread which would see the movement of travel a horse made. His findings were a very significant development in moving pictures.
He is without doubt one of the most influential photographers of the modern age. One of his most famous works was the moving horse with the zoopraxiscope which took photos one after another in a sequence that couldn't be captured by the mere naked eye. The animated GIF shows the pictures together so they appear to be moving. This is more or less what films are: a load of images played together at 24 frames per second. I will be experimenting on moving images such as GIF's and time lapses over the next couple of lessons and documenting my findings. |
Above is a very famous piece by Edward Muybridge showing how at one point of the horses gallop all legs were off the floor and it is technically airbourne for a split second.

Animated gif's
If you are unsure what a animated GIF is, you will probably have seen them as they are the majority of images on tumblr. A GIF is a special type of graphic image. What it does is play a number of stills in a repetitive sequence so it gives the effect that it is moving. We had time to experiment with some GIf's using the app Mopho on the ipads. It was quite hard thinking of a good GIF that we could use as the simple ones often looked better. We did manage to get some good images over the course of the hour of study.
Also there was a computer application called GIF melter which allowed us to take the GIF's url and distort images in strange ways. However I have not done this but when I do I'll be sure to show some examples of it. |
Time-lapse and stop motion
The idea of animated GIF's and Edward Muybridge moving images has been discussed and the difference between still and moving images. Therefore stop motion and time lapse can be described. Firstly you have stop motion which is made by getting lots of similar animations or images to give the image that it is a video; it has a look like no other and is often found in animations. Then there are time-lapses which will focus on something usually like a city but can be anything as long as it changes. It will take a picture, for example, every 10 seconds for 2 months and put it together to have a flowing set of images.

Time Lapse |
This was an example of a time-lapse that I found, although it was a bit disgusting. It really shows the idea of a time-lapse. By this I mean that it shows a change of something which is usually what time-lapses try to incorporate.
